Description

This symposium will focus on the management of patients with CF that become critically ill because of acute respiratory failure or other complications such as pneumothorax, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) and massive hemoptysis. The medical and physiotherapy management of patients with CF and these complications will be presented. Where there is evidence from research studies to guide practice this will be presented. Where there is no published evidence, expert clinician opinion will be provided. Treatment will include the use of non-invasive and invasive ventilation together with extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation when required to provide patients with lung bypass.

Educational Objectives:
  • Discuss the medical management of critically ill patients with CF with acute respiratory failure and other complications.
  • Explain the physiotherapy management of critically ill patients with CF in acute respiratory failure or with DIOS, pneumothorax and hemoptysis.
  • Describe different types of airway clearance techniques and early mobilization for patients on ambulatory ECMO in different countries.
