Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

Kara S Hughan, M.D. Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Dr. Hughan is a practicing pediatric endocrinologist at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Her patient care interests expanded 4 years ago when she began an outpatient CF Endocrine clinic. She also cares for patients with CF-related diabetes on the inpatient consult service several weeks each year. In September 2016, Dr. Hughan was awarded the CFF EnVision CF award, a program designed to mentor junior faculty to develop expertise in the endocrinologic care of patients with CF. Dr. Hughan recently expanded upon her clinical work and developed clinical trial proposals with another EnVision mentee, Dr. Maria (Sukie) Rayas, to investigate the overlap of liver fibrosis (determined by liver stiffness using the imaging modality transient elastography) and glucose excursion (determined by oral glucose tolerance test) in children and young adults with CF. She is also proposing to examine the non-invasive measurement of mitochondrial function in individuals with CF. Additionally, Dr. Hughan is exploring factors that are associated with recovering lung function after treatment of lung exacerbations and whether glycemic control during these exacerbations relates to lung outcomes and whether glycemic control during exacerbations in patients with CF is related to nutrition outcomes.
