Babette Zemel, PhD is a Research Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and Director of the Nutrition and Growth Laboratory. She is a well-established research in the fields of childhood growth, body composition and bone health. She is a member of the NICHD Bone Mineral Density in Childhood Study Group, and currently has two NIH funded studies of Bone Mineral Accretion in Young Childhood Stud\ to investigate the patterns and correlates of bone accretion in one to five year old children and another study of genetic determinants of bone density in childhood and adolescence. Recently, she co-chaired the International Society of Clinical Densitometry Pediatric Positions Development Conference. Her primary interest is in the effects of growth, maturation, and body composition on bone health in healthy children, and in applying these findings to understanding bone deficits in children with chronic diseases.
