Sly, Peter David Personal Statement I have extensive experience in CF in both clinical care and research. I have been a consultant respiratory specialist for over 25 years. While my primary training was in respiratory physiology, I have an established track record investigating infection and inflammation, and the underlying mechanisms of airway disease, particularly in CF. In 1999 I was one of the key persons in establishing the AREST CF early surveillance program. Through this program I have published data leading to the understanding of links between inflammation and infection, and infection/inflammation and lung function and structural lung disease. I have also contributed to consensus statements in the area of cystic fibrosis. B. He has discovered major risk factors for the development of asthma and for the onset of cystic fibrosis lung disease, leading to a number of testable hypotheses to prevent or delay the onset of lung disease, which are currently being trialed internationally. He has been instrumental in developing methods for measuring lung function in infants which enable for the first time the study of antenatal versus postnatal environmental influences on lung growth and development.
