Pediatric Pulmonary Fellow
Dr. Michelle Hjelm received her degree in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University in 2009 and graduate Cum Laude from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2013. She completed her Pediatric Residency at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH in 2016 and stayed on as a Pediatric Pulmonary Fellow where she is currently in her third and final year of training. Dr. Hjelm is a co-leader of Nationwide's Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Mental Health Quality Improvement (QI) Committee and helped develop and implement the mental health screening process for all patients 12 and older for their center. Dr. Hjelm has received the CF Foundation Clinical Fellowship Award for the past three years for her research investigating the impact of CF related diabetes on mental health symptoms and disease in CF patients. Additionally, she participates in QI research to develop systems to better identify and manage mental health co-morbidities in her CF center. In addition to CF, Dr. Hjelm clinically cares for a variety of patients with pulmonary conditions including asthma, neuromuscular disease, chronic respiratory failure, congenital lung anomalies, and interstitial lung disease. She remains active in medical student and resident education as a Clinical Instructor at The Ohio State University and recently received the Courage to Teach Award for her exceptional teaching and mentorship of students.
