Rui Zhao Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Dr. Rui Zhao received his Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences from Peking University in China in 1998 and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Iowa in 2004. He received his postdoctoral training in stem cell biology at Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School from 2005 to 2012. Dr. Zhao joined the faculty of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in 2012. His laboratory mainly focuses on developing stem cell models to study human diseases and understanding the basic biological features of mouse and human stem cells. His current research is aimed at using CF patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (CF-iPSCs) to model the disease, test drug efficacies, and tailor personalized treatment strategies. Dr. Zhao holds a joint appointment from Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at UAB since 2017.
