Maria is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). She conducted doctoral studies at the University of Adelaide, Australia and completed postdoctoral research studies with Dr. James M. Wilson at the Gene Therapy Program at UPenn with an emphasis on gene therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF) and the immunological impact of CFTR gene transfer in patients with CF. Her current research is focused on developing viral-based vectors for lung-directed gene therapy of genetic diseases that include CF as well as engineering adeno-associated virus vectors to create vaccines for airborne infectious diseases that include influenza.
