Gabriela Oates Ph.D.

Assistant Professor

Dr. Oates is a medical sociologist with training in the social determinants of health (SDH) and experience in the application of SDH measures, tools, and data products for research in chronic respiratory diseases. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), with a secondary appointment in the Division of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Oates has received training in patient-centered outcomes research through a K12 career-development award, and clinical research training in the NHLBI/OBSSR Summer Institute on Randomized Behavioral Clinical Trials. She has experience in the analysis of data from patient registries and large cohort studies, and expertise in the application of geographic information system (GIS) methods in health research. She leads the Social Determinants of Health Core of the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center. Her research investigates the impact of individual- and area-level social and environmental factors on CF outcomes. The ultimate goal of this work is to develop strategies for reducing the burden of socioeconomic disparities in CF.
