Dr. Sagel is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the University of Colorado CF Center. Dr. Sagel is actively involved in patient-oriented research. The overriding theme of his research is biomarkers of lung disease in children with CF. His research centers on sputum and systemic biomarkers of airway inflammation and injury. Dr. Sagel has also been interested in airway infections in CF, and how specific CF bacterial pathogens including nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and the airway microbiome relate to clinical outcomes in CF. Dr. Sagel has funding from the NIH and CFF. Dr. Sagel has been involved with the national CFF as Co-Chair of the Biomarkers Consortium and with the Therapeutics Development Network as the former Chair of the Inflammatory Biomarkers Working Group and site investigator for several CF clinical trials.
